BookBub – why bother? For readers and authors

BookBub – why bother? For readers and authors

“BookBub is a book discovery service that was created to help readers find new books and authors. The company features free and discounted ebooks selected by its editorial team, as well as book recommendations, updates from authors, and articles about books.” (Wikipedia)

The company is most well-known in the US but it also does promotions for Canada, the UK, and Australia. It is also a book recommendation site (rather than simply a book review site). This means that you can more easily find 4 and 5 star-rated books.

What are the benefits for readers?

  • When you follow an author, you will be alerted every time they have a new book released and when they run especially cheap prices on a BookBub featured deal. These prices are most often between Free and $2.99 with most of the special deals being the lower price.
  • When you follow an author or genre (like Christian fiction or thrillers), you can see what are their top book recommendations. You will soon get to know which recommendations suit your reading tastes.
  • It is an easy site to do book reviews.
  • It is a well-designed site and you should be able to see all the books your favourite authors have written to make sure you don’t miss any.
  • It’s free, although it might induce you to buy more books! At least they’ll be on special.
  • You can make your profile completely invisible to others and yet still get the benefits above.

What are the benefits for authors?

Many authors don’t seem to be aware of BookBub and that they can claim a free profile.

  • The layout is beautiful with all your book covers displayed.
  • You can put up your own author bio and photo including a direct link for people to subscribe to your newsletter or your website.
  • I alert them when I have a new book published and they send a free notification to all your followers. This benefit alone makes this site worthwhile.
  • BookBub allows people who are not yet committed enough to subscribe to my newsletter, commit to a smaller step and they’ll still get notification of my new books or if I have a BookBub featured deal.
  • BookBub is very supportive of ‘wide’ authors. That is, authors who publish with companies besides Amazon only. They have clear links to Kobo, Apple, Google Play, and B and N.
  • You can recommend books to grow a connection with readers. I only recommend Christian books on this site, as I want to find readers who read what I write.
  • Once you have 1000 followers, I believe you can send out preorder notifications to all your followers.
