Novel: Grace in Strange Disguise – Contemporary Christian Fiction
Grace in Strange Disguise – Back Cover Blurb
Physiotherapist Esther Macdonald is living the Australian dream, and it doesn’t surprise her.
After all, her father has always said, “Follow Jesus and be blessed.” But at twenty-eight, her world shatters. Everyone assures her God will come through for her, but what happens when he doesn’t? Has she offended God? Is her faith too small? So many conflicting explanations.
Will finding the truth cost her the people closest to her heart?
Grace in Strange Disguise – The Journey
It has been a four and a half year journey of learning to write fiction. But the journey from idea to publication has been a lot longer. Read the fuller story here.
Grace in Strange Disguise – Early Australian Reviews
- The opening chapters might give the impression that this novel is either, a really depressing book about dying or, a really cheesy book about being miraculously healed BUT this book is neither of those things. It isn’t even really about death. What it’s really about is The Question. The Question about what life is about and what is most important – and what really is not.
Esther is a twenty-something who seems to have everything – when in actuality she is not only afflicted by her health but also troubled relationships and theological questions … the conversations later in the novel were gold. This novel is for people who claim to be Christians, people who are Christians, people who really don’t like Christians, people who really like Christians, people who are appalled by the church, people who love the church, people who are just using the church for self-promotion … If you have really strong feelings either way about Jesus and Christianity, this book will stir your pot a good deal more. (Trix W, Australia) - This captivating story is set in Australia … It made me think how I could share Jesus with others in a meaningful, practical and intelligent way. It challenged my thoughts on the place of healing in the life of a Christian and explored what it looks like to follow Jesus in words and actions. I just wanted to keep reading to the end … a bit of a tear jerker. (Ruth F, Australia)
- What a powerful and instructive story. The subject matter is quite intense – but this reflects real life and challenges us to go back to the Bible and see what God really says about the struggles we face. The journey of the main character is inspiring and truly displays God’s amazing grace. (Julie I, Australia)
Grace in Strange Disguise – Early International Reviews
- This emotionally healing and moving read will be appreciated by many who have felt:
– fear of a terminal illness within your family,
– pain in your family communication,
– judgement for not having enough faith,
– confusion about how to follow Christ, or
– inadequacy in sharing your faith, especially in Western culture. This story will likely stir you to reflect deeply about your faith and relationship with God … I read it through in one sitting. (Robby B, USA) - The story of Esther MacDonald drew me in and held me. She came alive on these pages because I’ve met Esthers in my time and if I’m completely honest I’ve seen her in my mirror. The way she experiences grace and a fresh beginning gives me deep hope. (Marilyn F, Canada)
Grace in Strange Disguise – Writing a novel – a myth I believed
Writing this novel has been the toughest writing journey I have made. Sure, I’d written non-fiction, but fiction is unbelievably harder.

I am definitely looking forward to taking a break from my school books to read this when it’s out.
This sounds just like the type of book i love to read! Looking forward to getting lost in a good story whilst being encouraged in my faith at the same time.
Sounds like an interesting book, with a lot of thought-provoking material. I think a lot of people grapple with those types of questions and
it would be great to see a character working through those. I really like the cover too. Well done!
I am excited about the opportunity to read this book! I love books about Christians and their Spiritual journeys! It looks like it will be very a very thought provoking book. I’m looking forward to reading it!
My heart responds to stories. Really good fiction is like a window into the soul, and has sometimes been a means of transformation in my life. I eagerly anticipate Christine’s first novel, believing it is just such a story.
How exciting to get to this point, Christine. Grace in Disguise has an interesting premise on an important theme. Looking forward to reading it.
It’s sounding very interesting, Christine. Great you’ve come to this point – you must be excited. Looking forward to reading it.
Sounds like a powerful read. May God use it to impact people.
My desire for the book is that God does just that.
