1-2-1 Discipleship – my first traditionally published book

I never expected to write the book that became 1-2-1 discipleship. I certainly didn’t expect to have it accepted by a traditional publisher.

So what happened that led to 1-2-1 Discipleship?

In 2003 myself and another missionary designed a course to train missionaries in evangelism and discipleship. We knew that we always needed to improve in these two areas and assumed others also would appreciate the course. In 2005/6 we did a ‘test run’ in the Philippines. Despite a good first course no interest developed from other fields for five years. It was a frustrating time but as usual, God knew exactly what He was doing.

People kept asking me for advice about discipling others and I think it was this that prompted me to write down the second half of the course so that at least I’d have something to give them, rather than having to talk my way through all the information.

Meanwhile, I’d been working on a 30 Day prayer guide for Taiwan. It contained thirty stories of only two hundred words each. I wrote some of the short stories and also edited the others. Along the way, I worked via email with an editor in the UK. I must have mentioned my discipleship manuscript and she asked to look at it. After reading it she thought it might find a publisher. I wasn’t so hopeful and doubted anything would come of it.

To my surprise, she found a publisher, one I’d never heard of but I liked their vision and values. Prior to their accepting the manuscript, I’d had two rejections. From acceptance to release was about fifteen months which is a typical length of time for a traditionally published book. It was no major seller as British publishers do far less promotion and marketing than US publishers.

1-2-1 Discipleship: Helping One Another to Grow Spiritually was released by Christian Focus Publications in January 2009.

What is the content of the book?

Jesus’ last command to his followers was ‘make disciples.’ We know that, but how do we do it? This book aims to get you started. With practical sessions on your goals, starting out, teaching people to study God’s word and pray.
